About the ELA Course
8th Grade English Language Arts is a reading/writing workshop that focuses on using strategies to become better readers and writers. Each student will have an independent reading book, a reading log, a reading notebook, and a writing notebook. The bulk of the work in class will be done within these notebooks. The 8th grade ELA units will be based on both fiction and nonfiction reading and argumentative and analytical writing. Our first reading unit will explore how we read closely and analytically texts from all genres. The strategies discussed and employed will strengthen the students reading and writing skills as we work towards taking the 8th grade ELA NYS exam.
The NYS exam is scheduled from April 2nd to 4th, 2019. After the state exam, we will explore poetry, creative writing and begin preparing for high school reading and writing and the 8th grade ELA exit project. This project gives students the opportunity to demonstrate the growth of their reading and writing skills.
Parents and students are encouraged to consistently visit Power School at https://owncs.powerschool.com/public/ to keep track of upcoming quizzes, test, assignments and project due dates.
Major Projects and Assessments:
Student notebooks will be graded as projects. At the end of every writing unit, a final writing project must be handed in. There will be midterm and final assessments. Students will also be given quizzes and tests on books read in class, or on the strategies they have learned in a unit. They will be assessed on their grammar skills, and will be given grammar quizzes/tests.
